How to clean and care for teak furniture
Teak is a durable wood that requires little maintenance, therefore making it perfect for outdoor or indoor use. Teak is generally resistant to mold and rot but can still form surface mildew, if not cared for. Therefore it is best to regularly clean your teak furniture using the following methods.
You will need – A mixture of mild soap and water with vinegar mixed in a bowl (1 cup water to 1 cup vinegar) and a soft plastic brush. If you have some hard stains you can buy some teak cleaner from your local supermarket.
Start off by clearing your space – You should have sufficient room for your teak furniture to air dry. In the case of outdoor furniture, make sure it is a warm sunny day before you begin.
Apply your cleaning mixture – Apply your mixture on to your teak furniture and use your soft brush to rub the mixture in. Allow the mixture to sit for 15 minutes and then rinse the furniture with clear water.
Oiling teak furniture – Oiling teak is a good way to protect your wood and enhance its color. However, oiled teak is best for indoor teak furniture as the environment is stable. If you consider oiling your teak, you should do it at least every 2-3 months and place it in the sun to dry. It is best to use Tung oil or Linseed oil and these can be bought with additives such as UV blockers and mildew retardants. Remember to only oil your teak once it has been totally cleaned and dried.
